JBL AV2 - HD Audio with HDMI

While Harman’s current generation of surround processors do not decode TrueHD or DTS-HD Master Audio internally they can take full advantage of the benefits of any Blu-ray disc with a hi-resolution audio track using HDMI. This follows the recommendations of Dolby Labs and the Blu-ray Association, both of which suggest using a DVD player with a built in decoder to correctly decode the TrueHD audio and send the decoded signal over HDMI in PCM digital format. Also, the newer Blu-ray discs with advanced features such as Bonus View and BD-Live will require that the audio decoder be located in the player and not the receiver in order to get the full interactive features on the disc and still enjoy hi-definition audio.

For these discs it would actually be counter-productive and unnecessary to have the decoder in the receiver or preamp. For these reasons it is not necessary and can in some cases be harmful to the user experience to have the audio decoder live inside the receiver. Audio that is decoded in the player and sent via multichannel PCM digital (MPCM or LPCM) over HDMI is BIT for BIT identical to audio that is sent as a bitstream and decoded in the receiver. This makes the JBL AV2 the ideal product.
